How to Read Tarot Cards? Guide to Cleansing and Attuning Your Deck

Are Tarot Cards Really Magical?

When you first hold a tarot deck in your hand, looking at the medieval drawings, strange symbols, and intense colors on it, you might wonder, "How do these cards know the future?" Although Hollywood movies portray tarot as cursed, dark objects that definitively tell the future, the true esoteric (and psychological) approach is very different. Tarot cards are not magical; You are the one who is magical.

The famous psychoanalyst Carl Jung described tarot cards as visuals of the "Collective Unconscious (Archetypes)." The cards actually lay out before us like a mirror the energies we know inside but cannot face, the things that cross our minds but we cannot put into words (through the principle of synchronicity). However, for this mirror to work clearly, the reader (you) needs to "Attune" vibrationally with those cards. So how is this bond established with a new deck?

1. How to Cleanse a New Tarot Deck? (Cleansing Rituals)

When you buy a tarot deck (or receive it as a gift), those cards are exposed to the energy of dozens of people from the printing press until they reach you. The production line, the courier, the seller... Before transferring your own energy to the cards, you must clear (Reset) that deck from all previous "parasitic" energies. This is called the Cleansing Ritual.

Cleansing with Smoke (Smudging)

It is the most ancient and most effective method. Pass your cards one by one (or fanning the whole deck out) through the thick healing smoke created by burning Sage or Palo Santo. As the smoke penetrates the cards, state your intention aloud: "I lovingly send back to the source all foreign and negative energies on this deck that do not belong to me. May these cards be cleansed to show only the pure truth."

Charging with Crystals

Placing a crystal on your cards or inside their box when you are not using them is a great cleanser. Especially Selenite (the angel stone that cleanses itself and its surroundings) or Amethyst (the stone that opens intuitions and the third eye) are the best friends of tarot decks. The crystal absorbs the negative electricity in the cards like a sponge.

Full Moon Bath

Tarot cards are directly connected with lunar energy (intuition and subconscious). On the night of the full moon, leave your deck on the windowsill or balcony (so it can see the moon's light). The magnetic energy of the moon will charge your cards with 100% "Intuitive Energy" just like a phone battery.

2. Connecting with the Cards (Attunement Phase)

Your cards are cleansed. Now it's time to code your own energy (signature) into them. Readings made without attunement are cold and go no further than rote learning from a book.

  • Touching and Shuffling: Pick up your cards every day. Play with them even while watching television, shuffle them constantly. The energy in your fingertips must penetrate the cards. Become familiar with the texture and smell of the cards' paper.
  • Under the Pillow Ritual: For the first 3 or 7 days after getting your new deck, sleep with it placed under your pillow (or at your bedside). During sleep (in Alpha-Theta brain waves), your subconscious opens much faster to the symbolism of the cards. Many people report having intense and guidance-filled psychic dreams during this period.
  • Single Card Draw (Daily Interview): The best way to learn your deck is not to read the book, but to ask the cards questions. Wake up every morning, shuffle your deck and ask this question: "What is the message the universe (or my soul) wants to give me today?" Look at the drawn card. Without looking at the book's meaning at all, think about what that image makes YOU feel (fear, joy, or war). When evening comes, you will understand how the card gave you a message about that event during the day.

3. Common Mistakes Made While Reading

There are some major mistakes that break the enthusiasm of beginners on their tarot journey and block the energy of the cards:

Asking the Same Question Over and Over (Insisting)

You draw a card asking, "Will my ex come back?" The card drawn is the 3 of Swords (Pain and Separation). You don't like the answer and draw again, saying, "I wonder if I didn't shuffle well enough?" Tarot is not your lie detector or your servant. If you ask the same question repeatedly because you don't like the answer, the cards will start mocking you (Silly cards will come up). The first card drawn always comes from the soul, the second from the ego.

Being Dependent on the Booklet

Of course, the cards have a general framework of meaning (For example, Ace of Pentacles is money). But tarot is a "Visual language". Focus on the colors on the card, where the figure is looking. The Two of Cups is drawn (The Love card) but that day you focus on the goblet in the figure's hand on that card and get the feeling "You need to stay away from alcohol." The first feeling is always true. Your intuition is superior to the written rule of the book.

Reading Out of Fear or When Very Tired

Do not draw cards while having a panic attack, crying, or when you are excessively angry. Tarot is a mirror; it reflects your chaos and fears of that moment back to you as disaster cards (The Tower, Death, The Devil). Before doing a reading, always take 3 deep breaths, ground yourself (meditate), and stay centered (neutral).

Conclusion: Be Your Own Guide

Reading tarot is not a "fortune telling" session, it is a dark coffee you drink with your subconscious. Those cards are not the voice of a god outside of you, they are SMS messages sent to you by your very own Higher Self. Respect your deck, view it not as a "toy" but as a wise "Friend." As you share your secrets, your deck will also start whispering its own secrets to you.
