Breaking Toxic Cycles: Why Do We Always Attract the Same People (and Pains) into Our Lives?

The Illusion of "Why Do They Always Find Me?"

There is definitely a chronic cycle that many of us complain about in our lives. Some say "Bosses mob me in every workplace I enter". Some rebel saying "All the men who enter my life turn out to be selfish and cheat on me". Often we look at the sky and ask "What sin have I committed that I always attract the same toxic people (narcissists, avoidants) into my life?"

Here is a very bitter truth (but one that will completely liberate you when you hear it): It is not black magic or bad luck that attracts those people to you like a magnet. What traps you in this cycle is the Broken Radar (Unconscious Repetition Compulsion) in your very own subconscious. So you are not the victim, you are the scriptwriter.

What is Unconscious Repetition Compulsion?

According to this theory put forward by Sigmund Freud and deepened by Jung with shadow work; the brain considers the place where it is "Familiar and Known" safe, not the place where it is "Happy".

If your father was cold, unreachable, and unloving in your childhood; "Love = Being unreachable and Suffering" has been coded for your subconscious. When you turn 30 and meet a well-intentioned person who buys you flowers, values you, and texts you at 8 pm, your brain sounds an alarm: "This man is too accessible! There is something weird about this, this is not love!" and you reject that person saying "Too boring, there is no spark between us".

But when you enter an environment and see that "Cold and Narcissistic" person who ignores you, returns messages 3 days later, and doesn't care, fireworks go off in your subconscious. "I'm home! I know this feeling from my childhood. If I can seduce him and make him fall in love with me, I will finally have won the love my father didn't give me in my childhood!" you say and jump into that poisonous ocean with your eyes closed. And the cycle (karma) begins again.

The Most Popular Versions of Karmic Cycles (Scripts)

1. The Savior and Victim Cycle (The Savior Complex)

If you constantly find wounded birds (partners) who are alcoholic, unemployed, psychologically broken, or who say "save me", it means you have a Savior Complex. Your mission is to heal them. Why? Because you were probably that "Self-Sacrificing" child who separated your parents' fights, calmed them down, and couldn't live your own childhood when you were a child. You believe that you won't be loved unless you save someone. You need to make them feel "Needy" of you so they will love you.

2. The Abandonment (Runner-Chaser) Cycle

You always fall in love with people who have fear of commitment (Avoidant), who say "I'm not a relationship person", or who are married. As you chase them, they run away. You know you are in this cycle but you cannot break away. The universe is actually giving you this message: "If someone gives you unconditional love, you don't have the self-worth to carry it. Because you know you will be abandoned, you deliberately choose people who will leave you (who are impossible anyway) so your fear is justified."

3. The Narcissist and Empath Dance

If you are a highly empathetic, boundless, and giving person (Empath), you are the Narcissists' favorite prey. The narcissist feeds on your light, humiliates you, isolates you. You believe the lie "He will get better one day with my pure love". However, the problem is not how bad that narcissist is; it is your self-worth (shadow) wound in the question "Why don't I walk out that door despite being humiliated so much?".

How to Break This Cursed Chain (Karma)?

The way to break the cycle is not to change the partner. You leave that Narcissist Ahmet and go to Mehmet, but you realize that Mehmet is also a narcissist. The script is the same, only the actors have changed. To break the chain, you need to Tear Up Your Own Script.

Step 1: Confronting the Bitter Truth (Taking Responsibility)

First, get in front of the mirror and make this brutal confession to yourself: "I AM letting these people into my life. I AM allowing them to stay. I AM making compromises so they won't leave." The moment you step out of the victim (poor, deceived) psychology, you take the power back into your hands.

Step 2: Setting Red Lines (Boundaries)

You need to teach your subconscious a new "Normal" (a new definition of love). Love is not chaos, love is peace. Write down your "Red Lines" that you will NEVER tolerate in a person (or a job) that will enter your life on a piece of paper. (E.g., Cannot speak disrespectfully to me, cannot deliberately return my message late). When someone violates this boundary, even if that familiar "Excitement and Chaos" begins, you must be able to engage your logic and walk away (even if you suffer). This is the only way the safe is cracked.

Step 3: Trying to Choose the "Boring" One

While your broken radar is being repaired, give a chance to those safe people and environments that seem "Boring" to you. Because what you think is "boring" is actually Peace itself without chaos, war, fighting, and trauma. Your nervous system has stayed in fight/flight mode for so long that it thinks peace is "Boredom". Get used to that peace.

Conclusion: The Final Exam (The Universe's Test)

When you draw your boundaries, the universe sends you a new Toxic/Karmic partner (Exam Paper) who looks great from your weakest point, just to ask "Are you really healed?". If you can avoid going back to your old ways and slam that door shut, that is when the karmic chain shatters. And then, that calm, compassionate, and true "Soulmate" with whom you will share the rest of your life walks through the door. Because you are now ready for them.
